My name is Derek and welcome to my blog. I consider myself many things, above all else a full-time traveler and opportunist, and part-time pessimist. I’ve been on the road since I was about five years old, which involves some funny experiences – my mom knocking down a hotel chandelier with the moving truck – and some sacrifices – having a birthday at the beginning of the school year in September means it’s gonna suck.
Most importantly, moving around during what most people would call “crucial years of development,” and being the receptive yet smart-mouth little prick I was, meant I had plenty of time to read in the car, ask a ton of questions, and understand a lot about people and places, even unavoidably offending some along the way. I hope I’ve grown more savvy and empathetic.
I created Ideassey, a portmanteau of ideas and odyssey. I chose this name to capture my exploratory nature and journey through a variety of interests and ideas through travel, literature, culture, and world affairs and even revisit and reflect on personal growth.
Here are some questions I like to imagine you guys would ask me and the answers.

Sandwiches. First, there’s the Reuben in all its glory. Then other options. Bacon, egg, cheese on a roll. Banh mi. Döner. Ice cream sandwich. Cheeseburger. No, I will not retract the previous comment.
